      I found it really, really interesting, in a study I recently conducted about 10 severely abused foster children, how some children really have given up on adult relationships. These children had almost no faith whatsoever that adults would care about them, love them, or that the could trust the adults. The children were literally starting from scratch – learning to trust adults for the very first time – and that’s why foster care is so, so challenging. In our study, the children were much more willing and ready to trust the family dog than they were the foster parents – UNTIL – they built up basic levels of trust in adults again.
