Hi Grace! That’s a fantastic question. In my research I am looking at whether reading about characters that behave in friendly and helpful ways makes readers more likely to behave in those positive ways in the real world. So I’m definitely interested in the good influence that characters can have, in terms of my research.

In terms of writing and acting, there are lots of characters that aren’t ‘good’ and it would be pretty boring if we didn’t have those characters in books and plays, alongside the ‘good’ characters. I think if we create realistic characters, they are bound to have good and bad attributes (just like real people), and so by understanding why someone might do both good and bad things, we might better understand why people do good and bad things in the real world too. So for me, the goal is to make a character realistic and believable, and that way it may help us to understand other people’s experiences and their motivations for doing both good and bad things.
