      Similar to humans actually – mainly don’t hurt them! Except with animals, you can get away with hurting them if you have a really good reason – like in medical research, you can hurt animals if it’s likely that the research will be able to reduce a lot of suffering in people. I think that’s OK. But I can respect people who don’t think that’s OK. However, if you are going to take that position, you ought to also be a vegetarian, not take medicine, etc, otherwise it’s pretty hypocritical.
